Birthdays Past

Yesterday was my birthday and me and my Copper were reminiscing about times past. He reminded me that it was 16 years ago on my birthday that he asked me to marry him. Isn't that sweet? I remember it well...we were at the old Tahitian Lanai right near the Hilton Hawaiian Village. The restaurant no longer exists, but when it did, it had these cute little shacks that you could have your dinner in. Honestly, I had never been there before that night. As a local girl, I always thought it was way too touristy for me.

My Copper was a poor, young Marine at the time. He had picked up my gorgeous marquis ring with the diamonds on both sides. I always loved the shape. It is said that those of us with stubby fingers should choose marquis or oval; makes the stubs look less stubby. Anyway, I didn't know but he had also purchased a beautiful box that looked as if it was carved straight out of a tree's trunk. He remembered that I had admired it when we were out shopping one day.

While we were at our little dinner table in the private shack, he took out the box. I knew what was coming...this was it! My wonderful man blurted out, "Will you marry me?" I don't remember if I said yes at all, but I do remember, I started crying.

I remember asking him after a few years what he really planned on saying that night. He replied that he had it all planned out; what he was going to say, how and when he was going to say it, but when the time came he was so nervous, he couldn't think or say anything else but the question.

Oh well, I lucked out in the husband department. I think what he wanted to say in his proposal was that part of the reason he fell in love with me was because of the way I wrapped sandwiches. I'll save that story for another day.
